September Meeting Announcement
Topic: Next Generation of Concrete (1 pdh)
As the industry moves toward performance specifications, there is a need to evaluate the performance of the composite concrete sample, rather than the individual components. The Florida Department of Transportation is working towards the evaluation of structural Portland cement concrete to ensure the service life requirements for concrete structures are met based on material performance. This work presents the review of testing techniques which be used for determination of performance of concrete with respect to heat evolution, cracking, and durability at the mix design phase.
Speaker: Christopher C. Ferraro PhD, PE
Mr. Ferraro is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Coastal Engineering at the University of Florida. He received his Ph.D. at the University of Florida with an emphasis on Portland cement materials and durability. His research involves the study of the chemical and physical behavior of Portland cement-based materials, specializing in beneficial use of waste materials as alternatives to fly ash and slag cement for use in the construction process involving Portland cement concrete. He has over 20 years of experience and has published more than 70 technical papers, reports and journal articles which includes 15 papers related to use of alternative pozzolans, virtual modeling and durability of concrete. Dr. Ferraro is a member of the editorial board for Advances in Civil Engineering. He is a fellow of ACI and is the current chair of the Mass Concrete Committee (207) and is also a voting member of five other committees within ACI.
