Presentation:

Intuitively, one might automatically think that the surface hardness would directly correlate to the strength of the concrete produced. Chris Dumford will present a correlative study between concrete surface hardness and compressive strength that was performed utilizing both electronic and manual indenter hardness equipment concrete test cylinders subjected to compressive strength testing. The testing consisted of performing Brinnel hardness testing of the finished surfaces of compressive strength cylinders. The hardness results were then compared to compressive strength results from tested cylinders in order to determine if a valid correlation could be achieved.

After the short presentation, we will have a discussion about what the study showed, what during the mix development and construction methodology helps promote surface hardness, and what we can do locally to better produce a nice hard floor slab that so many of the Warehouse Distribution developers need for their robotic equipment require.

Speaker:

Chris Dumford is a Senior Materials Consultant for Terracon Consultants Inc. in their Cincinnati Office for over 36-years. Mr. Dumford has been consulting with the construction industry on concrete failure analysis including fractures, surface failures, flatness and levelness issues and various other aspects of concrete failure issues. During this time, he has developed test methods for locating voids between concrete and steel surfaces utilizing Impact-echo testing, wood sample testing, and testing of various other construction materials. His previous experience includes working in the Nuclear power industry and working for the Military.
