Topic: What Can UHPC Do For You?

Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) is concrete with very high compressive strength, tensile strength and durability.  It can be used to make concrete members longer, thinner and lighter weight. Creative use of UHPC could open up new markets for concrete and lower total in-place cost.  In this introduction to UHPC, we will discuss what sets UHPC apart from the concrete you are used to using. Examples of UHPC is use will be give to illustrate some of the ways that you could put it to work to increase construction speed, improve durability and gain flexibility with member geometry to reduce costs.  We will discuss what it takes to make it economically at your plant, and finally we will examine how to test its unique properties.

Speaker:  Kyle Riding is an associate professor of civil and coastal engineering at the University of Florida. Prior to that, he spent 8 years at Kansas State University.  He is the chair of the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute Concrete Materials Technology committee and is a voting member of ACI 201 Durability of Concrete, ACI 207 Mass Concrete, ACI 231 Material Science of Concrete and ACI 318A Building Code: General, Concrete and Construction.  His research focus is on concrete construction, durability, test methods and repair. He is a registered professional engineer in Florida, Kansas and Nebraska.
